What 16 Diverse Leaders Taught Me About Discipline at IT Nation Secure
When I packed up the Joey Pinz Podcast mobile studio and headed to Orlando for ConnectWise IT Nation Secure 2025, I knew I’d be surrounded by cybersecurity pros, MSP innovators, and tech entrepreneurs. What I didn’t expect was that every single one of the 16 conversations I recorded there—despite their diverse roles, backgrounds, and perspectives—shared one core ingredient:
👉 Discipline.
Not in the rigid, military sense. But in the sense of structure, intentionality, and staying focused when it counts.
🎙️ Conversations That Crossed Boundaries
Across two packed days, I spoke with founders, sales leaders, compliance experts, and former pilots. We explored topics like:
- Sales processes reimagined
- Cyber resilience under pressure
- Leadership in the face of burnout
- The personal rituals that keep people sharp
Each of these episodes is unique, but here are a few discipline-driven insights that stuck with me:
🔍 Discipline Is Reinvention
Jean Templin (#639) and Jamie Williams (#640) both spoke about shifting mindsets in sales—marketing before selling, and asking better questions. Discipline, in their world, is about being intentional in how you show up, not just what you pitch.
🛫 Discipline Is Precision
Ricardo Villadiego (#641) likened cybersecurity to flying a plane—hundreds of micro-decisions made calmly, consistently. That kind of steady execution only comes from disciplined preparation.
🚀 Discipline Is Empowerment
Rayanne Buchianico (#642) and Mike Estep (#643) showed how strong operational discipline frees MSPs and small teams to scale without chaos. For them, discipline wasn’t restrictive—it was liberating.
🔥 Discipline Is Resilience
When Tim Weber (#648) talked about firefighting and cybersecurity, or Matthew Panizari (#654) shared his story about overcoming “cyber fires,” it was clear: staying calm in the heat comes from practiced presence—discipline built over time.
🧠 Discipline Is Simplicity
Matt Holland (#646) described the journey from spy-tech complexity to MSP simplicity. His mission? Remove the noise so people can focus. That’s discipline in design.
⚙️ Discipline Is Listening
David Raissipour (#651) emphasized that growth in leadership doesn’t just come from speaking—it comes from listening. That’s a discipline I’m still learning.
🌎 Not Just for MSPs
Yes, this was a tech conference. But the lessons were deeply human.
Whether you’re a parent, entrepreneur, artist, or athlete—discipline isn’t just for systems and checklists. It’s for how we treat people, how we manage our time, and how we stay connected to our purpose.
Each of these 16 conversations will be released throughout July. I hope you’ll listen—not just for the tech wisdom, but for the stories of grit, curiosity, and commitment that unite us all.
